    WordPress Interactive Training

WordPress Users Want To Learn More

We think there is a huge community of WordPress users who have some level of WordPress knowledge, but they want to learn more about WordPress.

Also many people are trying to figure out how to match up the technical stuff that they learn about WordPress and the web, with real and practical ways that they can apply these things to their website and their business.

    Existing Resources

There are plenty of existing resources available to assist folks who want to learn WordPress, like online video tutorials, books, and even paid training by the hour. We even offer our own version of online WordPress Tutorials and Personalized One-On-One and Group WordPress Training

We're Filling The Gap With 'WordPress Interactive Training'

    WordPress Interactive Training (meetup group)

But we think there's still a huge need for low cost, hands-on, very practical, "this is what I need to learn, show me how to do it" type of WordPress Interactive Training.

And there's also a need for case-by-case WordPress Help and Support for those struggling with specific issues with their WordPress website, or things that they need specific help with that aren't covered by online tutorials.

So we started the WordPress Interactive Training (meetup group).

Everybody loves WordPress! No matter what level of WordPress user you are, everyone needs to learn more about how to use WordPress plugins , themes , and techniques to enhance their website or blog!

Social Media and Marketing tips and Small Business Operations 'best practices' advice will also be provided along the way as an added bonus!

    WHO

This is a national group, not specific to any region.

    This group is for:

    • WordPress users from Beginning to Advanced.
    • Those wanting to learn more about WordPress.
    • Those wanting to know the best plugins to use for this or that.
    • Businesses, Organizations, and Individuals using WordPress.
    • Bloggers.
    • Those considering moving over to WordPress from another CMS or blogging system.

The WordPress Help & Training meetup group is mainly for WordPress users...teaching WordPress to business owners, website managers, and bloggers who want to go deeper.

Although it would probably be helpful for beginning level developers, it's not meant to be a web developer training (I don't expect to get into developing themes, plugins, APIs). This group is less about custom coding and WordPress 'hacks', and more about what you can do with WordPress with off-the-shelf plugins and themes.

We will teach on how to configure and customize themes and configure plugins, and which ones are best to use based on your needs and requirements (the best plugins to use for the particular topic at hand will be covered extensively in almost every training).

There will definitely be good WP tips and tricks, and marketing and social media tips!

I expect this group to really grow and take off, and even go national...so get in early!

    Co-organizers & WordPress Trainers Wanted!

If you are an Advanced or Expert WordPress user and want to get more involved in this group by planning or presenting, or partnering in any other way, we welcome your participation...please contact Jeff Kemp 303-888-5140.

Meta Data Character Limits – What are the character limits when adding meta data to a web page?

    SiteSubscribe : March 12, 2012 12:37 pm : Blog, Knowledgebase, SEO

What Are Meta Data and Meta Tags?

Adding meta data to a web page is an important part of ‘on-page’ SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for your website. This meta data helps to tell the search engines what your website or any given web page is about, and sometimes more importantly, can show well-written relevant information about your website in the search engine results to the human person doing the searching.

The meta data are stored within the following ‘meta tags

    • Page Title
    • Page Description
    • Keywords

There are a few other less used meta tags, but we won’t discuss those since they are far less important when it comes to SEO.

Meta tags are stored within the header of your website for search engines to crawl so they know what your web page is about in addition to crawling your content. The meta tags are not displayed visibly for your website visitors, but are there solely for search engines, and for the benefit of your website visibility within search engines.

Example of meta tags in your website’s header:

<head>  <meta name="description" content="This is an example of a meta description. This will often show up in search results."> </head>

    Meta Data Character Limits

There are character limits associated with each type of  meta tag. This is because search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and such have a particular algorithm they use, and any data that falls outside of the usable character limitation is ignored, and in fact perhaps may even be counter productive when trying to get good search engine rankings. Think of it like cropping an image, where anything outside of the crop area is discarded and considered useless.

    Known Meta Data Character Limitations:

    • Page Title:    70 chars
    • Page Description:    159 chars
    • Keywords:    exact limit unknown, but thought to be around 10 Keyword phrases or 120 chars (separated by commas)

    Search Engine Algorithms

The actual algorithms used by search engines and the weight of each meta tag in relation to it’s influence on search engine results is different for each search engine, and is generally quite a mystery…and is constantly changing. So to optimize your website for search engines it is recommended to use current best practices at any given time based on the knowledge of experienced SEO Experts. Usually a little research on the internet will yield some good SEO advice (some good links to SEO advice provided below).

    Some Basic SEO Advice

Is there value in using the Keywords meta tag?

As of 2009 Google (and more recently Bing) both ignore the Keyword meta tag, but at least Google uses the Page Description meta tag. So it’s a good idea to focus on a thoughtful and well-written Page Description.

Even though some search engines like Google ignore the Keyword meta tagmany other search engines and directories do not ignore Keywords, so if time allows go ahead and optimize the Keyword meta tag for your most important web pages.

    • Spend more time on adding quality original content to your website, and less time worrying about optimizing meta tags. This is because more and more lately the search engines are using content rather than meta tags to influence web page ranking.
    • Spend a little time to create a well-written Page Description for each page/post of your website that contains some of your Primary Keywords that are also embedded within your page content.
    • Even though Google ignores the Keyword meta tag, many other search engines do not ignore Keywords, so if time allows go ahead and optimize the Keyword meta tag for your most important web pages.
    • Having a succinct list of keywords can also serve to help you when creating your content so that you intentionally use some of those keywords, and particularly helps you to use your primary Keywords (the first couple of keywords in your list that are the real focus of your page).
    • For your Keyword meta tag use keywords that are found within your page content (otherwise don’t bother using those keywords as they’ll serve no purpose).
    • Keywords can be made up of phrases of words that are separated by commas. So put in phrases to help make your keywords more meaningful, and to make your keywords less competitive, as shown below.
    Keyword Example:
    website design

(very broad and highly competitive keyword)

    vs.

    website design company Denver

(more narrow keyword, though still competitive it is not as competitive)

Deactivate WP Smush.it When Not In Use

    SiteSubscribe : March 9, 2012 8:32 am : Blog, Knowledgebase, Plugins

WP Smush.it  (link to plugin developer) is a good plugin used to compress WordPress images (known as ‘image optimization’) that helps your website pages to load faster.

Unfortunately, when left activated WP Smush.it slows down your site…so it has the opposite effect it is meant to achieve!

    What We Recommend

So we recommend you only activate this plugin as needed (when adding images) to get the benefit of image compression for new images that are uploaded, then deactivate it immediately when done uploading images since it will slow down your site.

    Use Only As Needed

Since activating and deactivating the WP Smush.it plugin every time you want to add a post or page is a hassle, you can leave it deactivated most of the time, then run a ‘bulk Smush.it’ once in a while to compress any images that you may have missed.

Bulk Smush.it will run through all of your images at one time and compress (or even re-compress) any images it can. Bulk smushing can take a few minutes to process.

Optimizing Images for the Internet and Image Manipulation Tools

SiteSubscribe : February 18, 2011 2:38 pm : Blog, Knowledgebase, Tools We Recommend

Which Image Type Should You Use On Your Website?

    Different Formats

There are four primary formats to choose from when optimizing images for the internet. Each format stores and compresses image information differently. These four main formats include PNG-8, PNG-24, GIF, and JPEG. Below we will discuss the different formats and what images they work best with.

    GIF

The GIF format is a bit-mapped image format and is the most commonly used format for web graphics. It supports up to 256 colors, transparency, and animation. Typically the PNG-8 format compresses better for most web images, although for really small images, or images that require transparency or animation, GIF is an ideal choice.

    JPEG

The JPEG (JPG) format works well for photographs and other large images with many colors because of it’s lossy compression algorithm. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. This often allows large images to be compressed more than any other format with little or no perceptible loss of image quality

    PNG-8

The Portable Network Graphics is a bit-mapped image format that uses a loss-less data compression algorithm. It was designed to be a replacement for the patented GIF’s. This format does not support transparency, translucency, or animation. This format is the best choice for most internet graphics.

    PNG-24

PNG-8 and PNG-24 are the same format, however when transparency, translucency, or more than 256 colors are used, 24 bits are used to represent each pixel instead of 8. This increases the size of the image and can usually be avoided. If only transparency is required than use the GIF format instead. Also try to avoid translucency by flattening the images so that you can use an image format with less overhead.

    Choosing the Right Format

Adobe Photoshop has a nice feature within the “File -> Save for Web” function. It allows a nice 4-up view where you can compare the file size of three different image settings and compare the quality with the original. First compare the different formats GIF (with 256 colors), JPEG (high quality), or PNG-8 (with 256 colors) and decide which format is best suited for the given image based on the resulting image size. If JPEG is the best choice try to further compress the image by reducing the quality to an acceptable level. For PNG-8 or GIF images, try to compress the image further by reducing the number of colors used by the image. Often times you can reduce the number of colors down to 128, or even 64 colors, without any noticeable effect to the human eye.

Crop and Size Your Images Before Uploading

    Image Editing

    Image Resolution

One of the best things you can do to optimize your images is to save them as 72dpi before uploading them (72 dpi or ‘dots per inch’ is computer screen resolution). Images above 72dpi have no visual improvement when viewing them on the web, and can create very slow page loads for your website. If you are using a photo taken with a digital camera it becomes very important to reduce the image resolution before uploading them to your website since today’s digital cameras capture very large images that aren’t optimized for websites.

    Image Size

It’s also important to crop your images to a reasonable size before uploading them to your website. Sizing and cropping your image to generally no larger than 500px to 600px wide can help your page load speeds. Sometimes you can get away with 250px wide depending on how your are using your image.

If you are using an image at a reduced size on your website, and never reference the full size image, then you would benefit from creating a copy of the image, resizing and cropping it, and saving it as a new file name before uploading it to your website. This will help to optimize your page load speed so that you are only pulling in images at the minimum required sizes.

If you are referencing an image on your website in more than one size than save and upload the image as the largest size required. You can then reference smaller sizes, and since the image is cached on the first view, the various sizes will load quickly.

It also helps to make sure your IMG tags in your HTML are calling out the size attributes to also help optimize page load speed.

    Image Optimization Tools We Use

WordPress has its own image sizing and cropping tool built-in, so that is a good option if you need to crop or downsize an image. But often we need to do more image optimization beyond simply sizing an image. That’s where we look to some of our favorite Image Optimization Tools for Macs:

    • The Preview application that comes with Macs is useful for quickly downsizing image size, image resolution, and cropping images…and it’s free since it comes pre-installed with every Mac (free).
    • EasyBatchPhoto is a very affordable image utility for converting, sizing, and watermarking images, especially when you need to perform image manipulation on ‘batches’ of images ($24).
    • EasyCrop excels at screen captures, image sizing, image conversion, and offers full drag-and-drop support ($12).
    • ImageOptim optimizes images — so they take up less disk space and load faster — by finding best compression parameters and by removing unnecessary comments and color profiles. It handles PNG, JPEG and GIF animations (free).
    • Photoshop – no list of image editing tools would be complete without Photoshop, but of course, it is very expensive and has a steep learning curve, so it isn’t for everyone. We use Photoshop almost everyday, but if there’s another tool that can get the job done quicker we’ll use it since Photoshop takes a long time to load, and is a huge memory hog. However, Photoshop’s ‘save for web’ function is very useful for sizing, converting, and optimizing images for best results. Photoshop even provides an indication of how big a file will be when saved for web, and how long in seconds it will take to download, which is very useful info for web designers ($700 – $1,000).
